This painting is part of the group: Two Shutters from the Werden Altarpiece. This is the outside-left shutter of an altarpiece from the Abbey of Werden near Essen in Germany. Both wings are in the National Gallery Collection, though the fronts and backs have been separated. It is not known what formed the centrepiece of the altarpiece.
